In 2021, Higashikawa, one of the main production areas of Asahikawa furniture, was established “Good Chair Day” with architect Kengo Kuma. In conjunction with this effort, this exhibition will curate and display world-famous chairs from “Oda Collection” by theme with the 14th of each month as a replacement day.
From April 14th, 2024 to August 19th, 2024 (From June 17 – June 25, exhibition will be temporarily suspended), we would like to introduce you to the “Outdoor Chairs” among the masterpiece from Oda Collection. It is said that it was around the latter half of the 18th century that it became common to bring chairs out to enjoy the outdoors. Starting with the Industrial Revolution, in an increasingly industrialized society, the way people live and work has changed significantly, and an outdoor culture has developed. Even in modern times, the outdoor boom has continued over the past few years, and many people are seeking refreshment in nature. There are two types of outdoor chairs: those that are taken outdoors when needed, and those that are always placed outdoors. The former requires lightness and foldability for portability, while the latter requires durability against environmental changes such as rain, wind, UV rays, dust, dirt, and corrosion.
