Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007), the great master from Denmark, a nation renowned for design. Celebrated as the epitome of craftsmanship, Wegner created over 500 chairs throughout his lifetime, including the widely beloved Y Chair (1950), and led the development of 20th-century furniture design.
This exhibition, organized with the cooperation of Higashikawa in Hokkaido, home to the collection of chair researcher and modern furniture collector Noritsugu Oda, presents approximately 160 of Wegner’s chairs along with other furniture. It will be the largest retrospective of Wegner ever held in Japan.
Although privately assembled, this collection forms a systematic and high-quality body of works that allows visitors to trace Wegner’s life and career, representing the core of Mr. Oda’s more than half-century of collecting and research in modern furniture design. The exhibition features prototypes of Wegner’s iconic The Chair, including an early version with rattan wrapped around the top rail, presenting four variations in total, along with reissues of discontinued designs. These rare and exceptional works are brought together in one place. Through the masterpieces of the Oda Collection—renowned worldwide for both their quality and scope—visitors will encounter Wegner’s design philosophy, at once steadfast and refined.
