Masterpiece from Oda Collection Vol.19 “Danish Modern Design”

Higashikawa, a major production area for Asahikawa Furniture, has designated the “Oda Collection” as public property and is working on various initiatives to promote the furniture and design industry. As part of these efforts, from December 2, 2025 to January 18, 2026, the town will cooperate in the exhibition “The Supreme Craftsmanship of Hans J. Wegner – Works from the Oda Collection,” held at Shibuya Hikarie in Tokyo. In this exhibition, titled “Danish Modern Design,” we will introduce six designers who shaped the golden age of Danish design, along with their works, which are also related to the Wegner exhibition.

Denmark, a small Nordic country, once flourished as a maritime nation, and its royal culture and high-level craftsmanship continue to be passed down to this day. In the 19th century, following the collapse of absolute monarchy and the loss of territory, Denmark restarted as a democratic nation, which deeply rooted values such as “the happiness of all citizens” and “equality” into everyday life and culture. Danish designers regarded furniture not as “artworks” but as “tools to support people’s daily lives,” aiming to create a better living environment as members of society. The furniture that resulted embodies a fusion of functionality, beauty, and craftsmanship. Its simple and refined forms, comfortable seating, and streamlined construction become increasingly appealing the longer they are used.
